Day 292: Living The Word Structure

In this blog I will look at redefining the word structure.

How have I lived, and how do I currently understand the word structure?

For me, being structured has been related to the ability to organize, plan, live with foresight and prudence. I have lived structure when it comes to planning my weeks, my days, using a calendar, and structuring my time and responsibilities. I have found structure to be a very useful and important word, as structure makes things a lot easier. With an effective structure there is more room for improvisation. This is for example true in music, where knowledge of the basic scales (structure) gives you the possibility of improvising and creating harmonious music through using tones in that scale.

What is the dictionary definition of the word?

The word structure is defined as follows in the dictionary:

  1. The arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex: the two sentences have equivalent structures | the company’s weakness is the inflexibility of its management structure.
    • [mass noun] the quality of being organized: we shall use three headings to give some structure to the discussion.
  2. A building or other object constructed from several parts: the station is a magnificent structure and should not be demolished.

Construct or arrange according to a plan; give a pattern or organization to: services must be structured so as to avoid pitfalls.

The etymology of the word.

Mid-15c., “action or process of building or construction;” 1610s, “that which is constructed, a building or edifice;” from Latin structura “a fitting together, adjustment; a building, mode of building;” figuratively, “arrangement, order,” from structus, past participle of struere “to pile, place together, heap up; build, assemble, arrange, make by joining together,” related to strues “heap,” from PIE *stere- “to spread, extend, stretch out.”

The widespread descendants of this ancient root are believed to include: Sanskrit strnoti “strews, throws down;” Avestan star- “to spread out, stretch out;” Greek stronymi “strew,” stroma “bedding, mattress,” sternon “breast, breastbone;” Latin sternere “to stretch, extend;” Old Church Slavonic stira, streti “spread,” strama “district;” Russian stroji “order;” Gothic straujan, Old High German strouwen, Old English streowian “to sprinkle, strew;” Old English streon “strain,” streaw “straw, that which is scattered;” Old High German stirna “forehead,” strala “arrow, lightning bolt;” Old Irish fo-sernaim “spread out,” srath “a wide river valley;” Welsh srat “plain.”

What is the sound of the word?

How can this word be redefined?

I find that the sound STRUCK-SURE obvious when sounding the word. Here, looking at the word struck, which basically implies a physical action, a movement. Because when we STRIKE, that is what we physically do, we move forward towards our target. And then, with the word SURE, it shows that there is a certainty that the strike will hit its intended target. The strike has been prepared, planned and when the time for execution is here – it is certain that the strike will hit where in its intended place.

The word structure as such is the planning and preparation of physical movement, creating the scene, and the environment, for the movement – it is the plan. I can see that structure is something that I can benefit from living in my life. This especially when it comes to taking care of my physical responsibilities, where I have a tendency to move from thing, to thing quite aimlessly, and then miss my strikes, because I am not following an effective structure.

Having a structure thus implies research, planning, preparation and forming a vision of how to direct a situation. Having a structure implies looking ahead, and seeing so that all points are taken into consideration, so that the physical foundation is there from which expression and movement can take place. Thus, an effective structure allows for more hits, and more strikes, physical movements that hit the intended target.
